OpenEMS IRC Channel

Post by nats » Sun 16 Dec 2018, 17:07

Hello,
I was searching help on openems and tried to connect to freenode irc channel, it seems to already exists it has been registered:

* Topic for #openems is: Official channel for the free and open-source electromagnetic field solver openEMS. Visit http://openEMS.de for more information
* Topic for #openems set by netsroht (Wed Nov 14 13:32:43 2012)

But I'm alone on it :)
Maybe I'm old fashioned but an IRC channel is often a good things for support, if nobody wants to maintain it I can volunteer to revive it !

Hi,

yeah a long time ago I created it (as can be seen by the name ;) )
But nobody really used it. And these days I'm not really online that often or long enough that it would make too much sense...
But of course you can hang around and maybe I will visit occasionally and/or others might use it.

regards
Thorsten

IRC!? After Emule lost its popularity, no-one even remember IRC.
We could also dig the ICQ, or Usenet... oh. how about mirroring wiki to Gopher? In my previous lab, 12 years ago, people were still receiving e-mails by UUCP... just because...

well nobody forces you to use it, but I must say, while all the services you mentioned came and went. IRC is very old but still quite popular in the FLOSS communities. I guess the problem for the openEMS IRC channel always was (and is) that the user base is just too small to maintain it properly...

Human psychology.
When you make it open and free, people try running it on Core2 with 4Gb.... and complain, that "it is raw and resource hungry, while some guy in the lab can make it in HFSS for me"
When you sell it for 120 000, people tend to use 5-10% of that budget for presents, including a new gamestation with 32 Gb...
