[Solved] website possible error: remote ssh test code

Post by smerrett79 » Tue 25 Jun 2019, 11:30

Hi, I'm following the kindly provided guidance here: http://openems.de/index.php/Remote_SSH.html

The test code suggests

Code: Select all

ssh <username>@<hostname> /opt/openEMS/openEMS/openEMS.sh
but I found that I needed the tilda (~) symbol. My working code was:

Code: Select all

ssh <username>@<hostname> ~/opt/openEMS/bin/openEMS.sh

So perhaps nothing needs to change - this is just a symptom of my lack of Linux knowledge! I understand there's a relative and absolute path difference and that's what I was experiencing. Anyway, the ~ fixed something that didn't work first time for me!

On Linux "~" means your home directory ("/home/<username>" usually). Thus the two path are completely different.
In the guidance I assumed that the admin (root user) installed openEMS in the root opt folder ("/opt"). But you have installed for yourself only (without root) in your home directory ("~/opt") which is fine too (like any other folder) of course...

Thanks - better to let this thread stand as a guide for other noobs than to delete it and maintain my pride! ;)

Everyone trying something new starts as a noob, but the alternative would be to not try anything and that's not a acceptable option...
That said, all is good and well, keep experimenting and learning new stuff!
