Hello, Katrina. Have you passed through the "First Steps" (http://openems.de/index.php/Tutorial:_First_Steps.html) tutorial succesfully?
If yes, you can write in terminal (ctrl+alt+t) the command
octave —gui
witch runs Octave with user graphic interface. After that you can copy to the octave all the script from tutorial and press F5 to save and compile script. It will open the window with geometry representation, after closing this window the results of simulation will be saved in file Et-...
