Very basic question

Is openEMS a research tool or something that could be used with a practical board that has dozens of ICs and hundreds of discretes?

I'm a researcher working in a research-lab developing openEMS for our needs, so yes openEMS is a research tool. But that does not mean that you can't use it for practical applications etc.

In theory FDTD is a very memory efficient method, so I don't know of what kind of simulation sizes you have in mind, but there is no build-in limit other than the memory available on your PC (if using the 64bit version).

Also openEMS supports MPI and therefore should be capable of running on a super-computers running e.g. Linux. But this is completely untested and as being a research tool I can't give you commercial support.

I hope that answers your question?
